Environmental Commitment
We're going green, and taking you with us!
GrubHub.com now offsets carbon emissions from every order placed through the site.
We have always felt uncomfortable with the carbon footprint that our
service promotes and we're finally in a position to do something about
it, and offsetting our delivery's carbon emissions is the first step.
From now until forever, GrubHub.com will calculate all carbon emissions
that result from orders placed over our website and we'll then purchase carbon
credits to offset the damage caused by these greenhouse gases. We're also making it incredibly easy to decline extra disposables like
forks, napkins, straws etc to cut down on waste.
Here's the information behind it…
Basically, we take the average delivery distance, multiplied by the
average miles/gallon of the typical delivery car, multiplied by the
number of deliveries we place per month and then buy enough credits to
offset that amount.
Here's an example, assuming:
3 miles per delivery
60,000 deliveries per month
17 miles per gallon and 8.55kg of CO2 per gallon of gas
[(3 x 60,000) / 17] x 8.55 = 90,530 kg of CO2 emissions per month
Sorry, math is painful, yet necessary when saving the earth.
For this example, we would need to purchase 91 tons worth of carbon offsets to
neutralize the environmental impact of the food deliveries placed
through GrubHub.com for just one month. Trading carbon credits isn't something the
average joe can tackle, that's why we're aggregating the credits and
taking care of it ourselves.
We've been working with
Carbon Solutions Group,
they "have master agreements in place with some of the largest participants in the carbon offset market today," and they put
this program together for us, everybody here was really impressed.
So that's it, we will be updating this page with our monthly offsets
so everyone can track how well we're doing. Check back often and
order twice as much now that your conscience is clear.
